April 10, 2008

 Call To Order: President Jack Miller called the meeting to order at 9:40 a.m.

Prayer:  Bill Elkin                                         Pledge of Allegiance:  Bob Martin

 

Recognition of Visitors - Jack Miller:

·        Motion by Elkin, and seconded, to allow Mr. Ted Karis, Liberty Mutual, to make a brief presentation to the membership.

 

Secretary's Report and Treasurer's Report:   

·        Motion by Louis Elliott, 2nd by Bob Martin to accept the reports as printed.  No discussion.  Voice Vote.  Motion Carried.

 

Board Meeting Report - Jack Miller:

·        HPOU President Gary Blankinship invited the Board of Directors to attend their monthly meeting in April.  We were very appreciative of the invitation and well received.

·        Gary Blankinship will be our guest at the May general meeting.       

·        Welcomed first time attendees.

·        Recognized members of Class 18 who started the Academy 50 years ago this month.

 

Sergeant Chuck Gonzales, Human Resources Phase Down Division:

·        Provided insurance information for those officers in Phase Down.

·        In 2001 Phase Down had no options.  Starting in 2002, there are currently Options A, B, C, and D.

·        Contact Sgt. Gonzales to discuss the Phase Down Packet before you contact Budget and Finance.

·        Sgt. Gonzales will help customize the correct Phase Down Plan for each retiring Officer.  The different insurance plans apply to only those officers entering Phase Down.

·        Sgt. Gonzales may be reached at 713-308-1235.  His assistant Donna Williams may be reached at 713-308-1243.

 

Executive Director - Bill Elkin:

·        Pension is @ $3.38 Billion.

·        42 officers have retired to date with 21 officers scheduled.

·        City has sent out Insurance Packets.

·        Effective 2009 Kelsey Seybold will no longer accept Medicare primary with HMO Blue as secondary.

·        Enough members attending the meeting were interested in purchasing a retired police officer badge to warrant pursuing some type of a wallet badge.

·        Thank you notes were received from the families of Polly Hatcher, Henry Gerhart and Leona Bullock.

 

PAC Committee - Steve Rayne:

·        Due to improved relations the HPROA will meet with the HPOU to screen political candidates.

·        Most PAC money is given to state level candidates.

·        Endorsements are usually made to local candidates.

·        A mature CD was moved into the checking account so it would be available for contributions to candidates' campaigns. 

·        Please contact Steve if you have items to donate to the Crockett Reunion Silent Auction. 

 

Treasurer Report - Jim St.John:

·        When membership rises, the HPROA budget improves. 

 

Legislative Report - Steve Lyons:

·        Now is the time the City, the HPOU, and the HPROA begin working on their agendas for the next State Legislative Session.

 

Website Committee - Jim Ashby:

·        Over 6,000 website visitors last month.

·        Turn off the Pop-Up if the Membership Renewal form will not print.

·        If you are not getting e-mails, the ISP may be blocking "Info@" titles.  Contact Ashby if you are not getting death notices, e-blast, etc..

·        HPROA maintains a secure e-mail site.  Addresses are not shared.

·        If you are having e-mail problems contact Ashby at info@hproa.com or at 281-498-3834.

·        The website Username and Password is available to all members by contacting the Webmaster by e-mail at info@hproa.com.

 

 

Membership Committee - Nelson Foehner:

·        Non-Members are contacted by the Membership Chairman, through mail outs and by current members.

·        Presented a HPROA Recruiting Incentive Plan in an attempt to stimulate member interest in recruitment of non-members.

·        A copy of the plan is attached.               

 

The Retired Badge - Nelson Zoch:

·        Deadline approaching for next months articles.

·        Class 37 was 40 years ago this month. 

·        Articles may be e-mailed directly to Zoch at lt2212d599@hotmail.com.

·        Any member with an address change should contact HPROA Secretary Cathy Buckles at (713) 802-2967, or cathy@hpdretired.com. 

 

Entertainment Committee - D. A. Miller:

·        145 attended the Conroe Reunion which was very successful thanks to the hard work of hosts Albert and Mary Nichols.  Cathy and Richard Buckles handled registration, Sal and Patty Gambino provided HPROA apparel, and Margery Dotterel took pictures. Stefanie Leonard  sold the new HPROA Challenge Commemorative Coins and Nelson Zoch was there with his book Fallen Heroes of the Bayou City,

·        Barbara Cotten and Ethel Riley handled the Silent Auction where $300 was raised for the Family Assistance Committee.  

·        Remember the HPOPS Retirement Seminar on April 19, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the HPD Academy.

·        The Crockett Reunion will be Saturday, June 28, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the Crockett Civic Center, Edmundson Drive off Loop 304, next door to the Crockett Motel.  The meal will cost $10 and be served at noon.  Steve and Vicki Rayne will host.  There will also be a silent auction.

·        There are 2 new RV Parks under construction in area.

·        The Fredericks Reunion will be held Saturday, October 18, 2008 at Lady Bird Park.  There will be 35 reserved RV spaced.  More information will be on the Website and in the Retired Badge.

·        The HPOPS Retiree Seminar will be Saturday, April 19, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the HPD Academy.  Over 500 participants have responded.   

Family Assistance Committee - Forrest Turbeville:

·        Please support the Silent Auctions.  Every penny goes to our members as needed.   

·        The sick and shut-in report is on the back table.  Please pick one up.  The oral report will cover only those added after the list was printed.  Family Assistance Reports are updated on the HPROA website. 

·        Please contact a member of the Family Assistance Committee with information regarding any officer who should to be contacted.  Delvin Kendrick, Nelson Foehner and Forrest Turbeville are on the Family Assistance Committee.  Turbeville can be reached by cell phone at (713) 319-5466.

 

Good /Welfare of the Association:

·        Hank Laird requested supporting Michael Ligon for Montgomery County Attorney.
